Research and development

Man has the power to evolve, to improve himself and to transform his environment with ideas and solutions that are sometimes daring and sometimes ingeniously simple, like "the egg of Columbus".

Area Impianti is made up of people who understand the importance of innovation and its challenges. The numerous patents it holds are proof of this and tangible evidence of its willingness to work consciously in the present but always with an eye to the future.

Patents
N. 0130022

Innovative system for extracting flue gases, gases, vapours and dusts from electric or induction cast iron furnaces during the charging phase.

N. 01300223

Process for the activation of sodium carbonate Na2CO3 by thermal decomposition of sodium bicarbonate NaHCO3. The reaction takes place in a temperature-controlled reactor and is used to make available the reagent under optimum conditions for the neutralisation of acid gases.

N. 01300224

System for the electrical and/or gaseous regeneration of DeNOX and DeDioxin catalysts, without stopping the waste-to-energy line.

N. 01300225

Automatic control of the compressed air cleaning system of the bag filters that authorises the firing pulse when the required vacuum threshold is reached.

N. 01300226

Rescue system for the abatement of mercury peaks that cannot be treated by activated carbon reactors installed in existing flue gas treatment lines. The bail-out system is automatically activated in response to an overload signal from the continuous mercury analyser upstream of the reactor.

Research topics
CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE (CCS)

In collaboration with the University of Padua, Department of Engineering (ICEA), we have studied forced carbonation in incinerators, evaluating the reduction of CO2 from flue gases and the valorisation of waste products. The aim of the research is to increase the sustainability of incineration plants through an advanced tool such as CCUS (Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage).

EVOLUTION OF THE CONFIGURATIONS OF SUPERCRITICAL CO2 POWER SYSTEMS FOR WASTE HEAT RECOVERY

In collaboration with the University of Padua, Department of Engineering (DII), the work analysed the possibility of producing electrical energy with supercritical CO2 (sCO2) power plants, recovered from the residual heat of glassmaking flue gases.

The work was published in 2021 in Energy Conversion and Management 237 (2021) 114031 Elsevier

SUPERCRITICAL CO2 AND AIR BRAYTON-JOULE VERSUS ORC SYSTEMS FOR HEAT RECOVERY FROM GLASS FURNACES

In collaboration with the University of Padua, Department of Engineering, this study compared four heat recovery systems applied to glass furnaces and evaluated their thermodynamic and economic performance. The results show that the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is ideal for smaller furnaces, while the Brayton-Joule air cycle is more suitable for larger furnaces. SCO2 systems show the highest power output but are limited by high investment costs.

The work was published in 2018 in Energy 168 (2019) 295e309 Elsevier.
